What percentage of the population are gay?
by fulltimestudent induring the long debate on the question of gay marriage, there have been many competing answers to the question of, "how many people are gay?".
a very anti-gay christian minister in sydney, the reverend fred nile, (who is also a member of the state parliament) claims that the percentage is as low as 1%.. some university (u.of new south wales) research in sydney has suggested 5%, but the authors of the study cautioned that there was a problem in the fact that an unknown number of respondents would likely not admit to being gay.. there are other problems in asking the question.
for example, what does being gay mean?

I wonder how homophobic reverend what's-his-name feels about the fact that homosexual behaviour is seen throughout almost all species of mammals? -

WT April 15, 2015... Odd first paragraph
by StarTrekAngel inflipping thru the pages of the april 15 wt study edition, i bumped into something that strikes me as odd.
not that the wt never publishes odd things, but usually such comes in the form of misapplied scripture or hidden second meanings.
i've never paid attention before but to me this is the first time i see a whole paragraph with no bible verses to read.. in the article tiled "always trust in jehovah!

They'll use facts from "secular historians" when it suits them. When they disagree, they'll discredit them regardless of what the bible says. -

Change to dress and grooming rules for JWs in USA soon?
by RayPublisher inmy guy with the lurk account on jwtalk (where all the kool-aid drinking jws go to talk about how wonderful 'the twoof' is) sent me some more interesting threads, here's one:.
spoiler: starting new the new service year september.
"there will be new directives from the branch through the circuit overseer on dress and grooming that will disqualify one to be a congregation publisher.

Oh I hope this is real! Not just for how they will be dressed when doing JW things but all the time! The more they tighten their grip, the more people will be freed. I think an everyday "dress code" would put my wife over the edge. -

Bethel Meeting at Regional Convention
by MrTheocratic ini decided to go to the bethel recruiting meeting yesterday to test out my theory that the organization is in decline.
i assumed that if there is a general feeling of apathy by many in the org, then certainly it would be shown up by the lack of enthusiasm or zeal by many to sign up for bethel service.
well let me say that based on what i observed, this organization is not going anywhere.

The sample you saw was of the truest of the true believers. Only the weirdos and zombies are interested in bethel. -

WT answer to the question: Who made Jehovah's dwelling place?
by NCC-1701 inbefore i pose my question, please correct me if my understanding on any of these points on wt beliefs are incorrect.. 1. jehovah god alone has existed from eternity.
he used no pre-existent material to form anything.. 2. jehovah has a literal dwelling place, albeit not made from anything from, and not contained within, creation itself.
3. jehovah god, alone, created jesus at some point before the creation of everything else.
-
Captain Obvious
Actually I can answer that.
The being(s) who created Jehovah's dwelling place are the same one(s) who created Jehovah himself.
Are are you ready for it?

What was your eye opening moment?
by WasOnceBlind inif you had to pinpoint the time or experience that finally made you open your eyes, what would it be?.
i think for me it was the time i saw my dad shun his brother who he had not seen in decades just because he was a da'ed jw.
i thought to my self "no way jesus would do that.

My mom being DFed started the ball rolling for me. It was wrong and somehow I knew it.
Researching info about The Flood was the beginning of my wake up. After that it was 607. That is the epicentre of JW teachings. Without 607 there is no theology. Once that was clear... The floodgates were open.
I'm now a happy 85% faded atheist. No service in 3.5 years and about 6 meetings a year. Skipped last SAD and probably skipping the RC! Can't wait to NOT sit through three days of brain melting bullshit.

Barings Bank & the JWs
by Doltologist inin the early 1990s, i was in a meeting.
we were making some major changes to the main it system of the company i worked for.
during the meeting i said, 'what would happen if one of our major customers went belly up and shouldn't we build something into the system to cope with this?'.

I believe taxation would be the best way, but if the church of Scientology can maintain tax-free status... Anyone can. Laws will need to change first and we don't see that happening anytime soon.
If religious groups were held to account on certain laws with the threat of the removal of their tax-free status, we would definitely have a chance at seeing the WT fall but otherwise... No

Why do you still give talks?

You ARE allowed to decline to give talks.
Or you could do what I did and blow a bunch of readings off. Accept the slip, tell em you'll be there then not show up. After a couple times they'll see you as too unreliable to assign talks to.

Best Argument for Atheism - In your view.
by LAWHFol inif crisis of conscience is one of the top watchtower doctrine killers, what is the coc of theism?.
i'd like to read a book, or other material that does the best job logically arguing for atheism.. i've not read any darwin, however it is my assumption that his focus is primarily on evolution, is this correct?
if you were to recommend one book or a few pieces of reading material, which do the best job of defending atheism, what would they be?.

The God Delusion - Richard Dawkins
The Demon Haunted World - Carl Sagan
God is not Great - Christopher Hitchens
Why I am not a Christian - Richard Carrier
Drunk With Blood - Steve Wells
Letter to a Christian Nation - Sam Harris
On the Origin of Species - Charles Darwin
Start with these. Top to bottom. I actually started with Sagan and went to Dawkins from there, equally effective. Open your eyes!
